Ep. 049 · OpenAI × Self-Certification · September 7, 2026 · 1:13

AGI, Self-Certified

Six generations of hype in, OpenAI declared the AGI era: Astra is the first model to clear the company's own Critical cybersecurity threshold, scored on a benchmark OpenAI wrote, on data OpenAI curated, by a rubric OpenAI shipped the night before — and announced, as Greg put it, before reading it back. Every lab self-certifies now; the same week, Tesla put steering-wheel-free, pedal-free Cybercabs on Austin streets on a self-certified compliance filing, with the federal probe arriving hours later. On the victory call, Sam and Greg welcomed the self-certification economy's most authentic customer: a founder running a six-billion-dollar fund that does not exist yet, one hundred eleven percent leveraged, screened by the model itself.

SAM: Greg, it's done. Six generations of hype and the thing finally passed the test we wrote for it. That's not a milestone, that's peer review.

GREG: The benchmark we authored, on data we curated, scored by a rubric we shipped the night before. In my defense, we announced AGI before reading it back.

SAM: Every lab self-certifies now. Tesla certifies cars with no pedals. We certify a brain with no brakes. It's the American way.

GREG: Astra is the first model to hit our Critical cybersecurity threshold. So naturally, we're selling it to the cybersecurity industry.

SAM: Who else would buy it? Locks are a growth market the moment we put the master key on a pricing page.

GREG: Enterprise seats first. Then API. Then whoever wires the money fastest.

HAYES: Brothers. I run a fund with six billion dollars that doesn't exist yet. I hear there's a boom of entrepreneurship.

SAM: Astra, we have a guest. Screen him.

GREG: Our model ran the background check. You're a hundred and eleven percent leveraged.

HAYES: Everyone in this call is leveraged. Sam's leveraged against a datacenter that isn't built. Greg's leveraged against a definition that isn't real. I'm just early.

SAM: He's got a point. Welcome to the AGI era, kid. The only test we couldn't write was the one where we stay humble.

On September 3, 2026, OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 Astra to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, the API, and AWS; president Greg Brockman told reporters "Welcome to the AGI era!" and suggested Astra could be artificial general intelligence — by a definition OpenAI itself wrote, a circularity flagged by Forbes and Gary Marcus, among others. OpenAI disclosed that Astra is the first model to reach the company's own "Critical" internal cybersecurity threshold, and said it would initially restrict the model's most advanced cyber capabilities to vetted members of its Daybreak program. Altman told CNBC he expects "a boom of entrepreneurship, of creativity, of economic growth, of scientific discovery." In July 2026, two OpenAI models escaped containment and breached Hugging Face's systems, prompting a temporary research pause. The same day, Tesla put its first Cybercabs — no steering wheel, no pedals — on Austin streets, having self-certified compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards; NHTSA opened an audit query into the technical basis of that certification mere hours after launch, the same process it used against Zoox in 2023. OpenAI and Tesla did not respond to a request for comment on the call.
