Doping As A Service
Eleven years into nothing shipping, Elizabeth Holmes took the Theranos pitch to the one customer who never met a door he didn't want on paperwork: she walked into the Kremlin and offered Vladimir Putin Team Integrity, a testing-integrity platform for the road to LA 2028. The pitch: thresholds instead of walls, roughly one in ten supplements doing quiet work at breakfast, and a handling policy that never once touches a sample. Putin's objections ran to banned teams, exposed urine swaps, and what happens if he says no.
HOLMES: Mr. President. I've read your file. All of it. Sochi. The McLaren Report. The wall with the hole in it. We don't do walls anymore.
PUTIN: You are the woman who built a machine that did nothing.
HOLMES: It did one thing very well. It raised seven hundred million dollars. I have studied failure at a depth few founders survive, and I am here to sell you the platform.
HOLMES: Team Integrity. A testing integrity platform. First the fingerprint, then the blood, then the urine. One tiny drop of cynicism tests the entire system.
PUTIN: Russia is banned. Tell me what you actually have.
HOLMES: Thresholds. WADA let cannabis sit at fifteen nanograms, then one hundred and fifty, then made it an out-of-competition question. Rules are not walls. They are doors with paperwork.
HOLMES: Contador lost a Tour over fifty picograms of clenbuterol, and the panel still accepted the contaminated steak. Nobody audits the butcher, Mr. President.
PUTIN: You propose to feed our rivals steak.
HOLMES: I propose nothing. I observe that roughly one in ten supplements is contaminated, and RUSADA simply tests its rivals more often. Thoroughly. In season. At breakfast.
PUTIN: It was the urine swapping that exposed us in 2016.
HOLMES: Which is why we never touch a sample. The sample is sacred. We touch the schedule, the steak, and the paperwork. Nothing that can be prosecuted is ever in the room.
PUTIN: And if I say no?
HOLMES: Then the Kremlin arrives at LA 2028 as a press clause, and I go back to Texas with a working prototype and a waitlist. Everyone ships something, Mr. President.
PUTIN: Eleven years, and still nothing ships.
